A scenic landscape at Walkmill Community Woodland of a grassy meadow with wildflowers, a small water body, and a hillside covered with trees under a partly cloudy sky.

Nature and wildlife

Walkmill is a vibrant example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision for nature. From a coalmine to a thriving woodland, this incredible transformation has allowed nature to flourish, and we're excited to share the landscape’s rich biodiversity.

As native plants and animals continue to return, we also recognise the importance of protecting this balance from outside threats. Discover more about the species that call this woodland home and help us preserve its natural beauty for generations to come.

Nature in abundance

After years of being left largely untouched, Walkmill now supports a rich diversity of native trees, wildflowers, and grasses, providing perfect habitats for its resident wildlife.

Help us to protect Walkmill

To protect our native plants and animals, we ask that you check, clean, and dry your footwear before and after each visit to help us prevent the spread of unwanted seeds and diseases from non-native invasive species (INNS).
