Walkmill volunteering
Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do at Walkmill Community Woodland. We simply couldn’t have achieved so much without the help of our fantastic team of volunteers.
We’re always looking for more enthusiastic people to get involved. Whether you're interested in practical conservation work, helping at events, or supporting our education programmes, there’s something for everyone.
Why volunteer?
Volunteering is a great way to:
Enjoy the outdoors and stay active.
Learn new skills.
Meet like-minded people and make new friends.
Give something back to nature and your local community.
Currently, West Cumbria Rivers Trust can cover your mileage costs (by car or bike) to and from the site. We can also cover the cost of DBS checks if required.
To ask a question or learn more about any of the volunteering opportunities listed on this page, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Sarah Clarke.
Regular volunteering
We run three monthly volunteer sessions on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. These sessions give you the chance to get hands-on in the woodland, helping with practical tasks such as tree maintenance, path work, and wildflower planting.
Email Sarah for further details or submit an application via our volunteering platform, Better Impact, to sign up for regular volunteering.
Ways to get involved
Corporate volunteering days
Looking for a meaningful team day out?
We offer bespoke environmental volunteering days for companies. It’s a great way to build team spirit and give back to the local environment. We'll tailor the day to suit your group size and interests.
Please email Sarah to discuss options or download our leaflet for more information.
Do you lead a group?
For example, Scouts or Guides? We’d love to welcome your group to take part in hands-on conservation activities. We have previously led sessions including tree planting, hedge maintenance, and bat walks. Please get in touch if you would like to get involved!
Learning volunteers
Prefer something less hands-on?
Join our education sessions as a learning volunteer. Help children and families explore nature, learn about wildlife, and get creative in the woods.
Citizen science
Help us monitor the wildlife at Walkmill. We're particularly looking for volunteers interested in tracking:
Red squirrels
Butterflies and bees
Wildflowers and pollinators
No experience needed, just an interest in nature. We’ll provide support to get you started.
Training opportunities
We offer a range of free training sessions to support and upskill our volunteers, including:
Hedge laying
First aid
Wildlife identification
And much more
If there’s a particular skill you’d like to develop, just let us know – we’ll do our best to make it happen.
