Acccess and amenities

The information on this page should help you plan your visit in advance. However, please let us know if you have any questions

Connect with nature

Walkmill Community Woodland is a peaceful, natural space where you can slow down and tune into the sights, sounds and rhythms of the environment. There are no bustling cafés, shops or visitor centres here –  just the peaceful sound of nature all around you.

This is a place to breathe, explore and discover at your own pace. It’s also a valuable refuge for wildlife and a thriving community-led space that welcomes everyone.

Paths and trails

Walkmill offers two main circular walking routes, including a 1.3-mile loop with gentle gradients and wide, well-compacted paths.

One route is classed as ‘suitable for all’ (accessible for wheelchair users and pushchairs).

The second, with slightly steeper gradients, is ‘suitable for most’ (accessible for all-terrain wheelchairs and pushchairs).

There are many other tracks and trails around Walkmill that are wilder places to explore on unsurfaced paths.

Seating and rest points

Benches are spaced intermittently along the main routes, and three accessible picnic benches are located on site. More seating and rest points will be put in over the next two years.

Please note that the ground conditions around seating areas may vary.

Free parking

Limited free parking is available on-site, with alternative free parking within walking distance at Moresby Rugby Club. There is currently no marked Blue Badge parking at Walkmill.

Public transport

The site is around 3 miles from both Whitehaven train station and the nearest bus stop at Parton Brow, Moresby Park. A new bus route from Whitehaven to Moresby Parks has recently been announced, called the Whitehaven Loop. More details will follow. The closest accessible taxi provider is Whiteline Taxis in Whitehaven.

Toilets and refreshments

This is a wild place, so there are no toilets or café facilities at Walkmill. For refreshments, head to nearby Whitehaven, just a short drive away, or come prepared with snacks, drinks or a picnic to have in the woods or on one of the picnic benches. The nearest public toilets, baby changing, and accessible changing facilities can also be found in Whitehaven.

Wayfinding and signage

New on-site maps, waymarkers and interpretation boards will be in place by Spring 2026.

Accessibility at Walkmill

We’re committed to making Walkmill welcoming and enjoyable for everyone. While this is a natural site without built facilities, we aim to apply Least Restrictive Access principles as we continue to improve the site. That means maintaining what we can, removing unnecessary barriers such as stiles and gates and exploring future improvements. We’re always happy to support groups planning a visit – please do send an email with any questions.

Things to keep in mind

  • Dogs are welcome, but please pick up your dog waste. This is becoming a significant problem. There’s a dog waste bin in the car park.

  • General waste and recycling bins are limited. Please use the litter bin in the car park or take your litter home with you.

  • Please wear sturdy footwear, especially after rain.

  • Mobile signal may be patchy in places.

  • The site is unmanned and does not have emergency facilities – the nearest defibrillator is at Moresby Industrial Estate.
