Outdoor learning

Connecting children with nature through adventure, curiosity and creativity.

Our forest school-style programme runs over six weekly sessions, each lasting 2.5 hours and based in the heart of Walkmill Community Woodland.

Session 1, 2 & 3

In the first three sessions, children explore the woodland’s rich web of life – learning how everything is connected through food chains and food webs. They investigate how animals survive in the wild and consider the impact of human activity on local wildlife.

Session 4 & 5

The next two sessions focus on survival skills.

Pupils imagine being stranded in the wild and explore the essentials: food, water, shelter and fire.

They build natural shelters, collect rainwater, and learn to safely light fires using woodland materials – ending with treats like s’mores and popcorn cooked on the woodland fire.

Session 6

The final session is about giving something back to nature. This could involve a hands-on conservation task or creating a wildlife-friendly item to take home or back to school.

This immersive programme helps children develop confidence outdoors, deepen their understanding of nature, and appreciate the value of caring for it – all while having a brilliant time.
