Discovering Walkmill

A hands-on learning experience for primary schools that brings local history and nature to life.

Day one

In the classroom, pupils step back in time to explore how Walkmill transformed from a working coal mine into a thriving community woodland.

Using real mining artefacts - such as a Davy lamp from the Beacon Museum - children learn key mining terms, study site images, and participate in fun interactive games that introduce the concept of land reclamation before discovering the wildlife now calling Walkmill home.

Day two

Time to head outdoors! Pupils walk the old pit road from Moresby Rugby Club to our Forest School area, connecting what they’ve learned in class with real-life landscapes.

Through creative, nature-based activities – from wildlife spotting to building miniature habitats – they explore how people and nature can thrive side by side.

This free programme is open to primary schools in West Cumbria.
